Stag at Sharkey’s (1909)

George Wesley Bellows (1882 – 1925) was an American artist known best for his depictions of modern urban life, particularly in his home city of New York. “Stag at Sharkey’s” shows two pugilists mid-action. The scene is Sharkey’s Athletic Club. At the time, boxing was illegal outside private venues. Bellows had the good fortune of living close to the club and would take inspiration from the events.

The term “stag” referred to non-members of the athletic club invited to take part in an event.
