Maine Teachers Speak Out on the Decline of Public Education
What is actually happening inside Maine's schools?
For the past nine months, the Maine Education Initiative (MEI) has been asking teachers across the state a deceptively simple question: What is actually happening inside Maine’s schools? The answers paint a troubling picture of an education system increasingly preoccupied with everything except education. Drawing on firsthand accounts from the classroom, the documentary explores how well-intentioned policies, administrative dysfunction, and misplaced priorities have contributed to the decline of public education in Maine.
A project of the Maine Policy Institute, MEI was founded to restore academic excellence, parental authority, and accountability to the state’s schools. Its work combines research with grassroots organizing, helping parents and local school boards reclaim a say in how children are educated. This documentary puts faces and voices to that effort, allowing teachers to describe the distance between what education looks like on paper and what actually happens when the classroom door closes.
